Chair's Welcome

The Department of Science and Mathematics (SaM) at Texas A&M University – San Antonio consists of the program areas of Biology, Mathematics, and Psychology, with support from Physical Sciences (Chemistry, Geography, Geology, and Physics).   We are a growing, multidisciplinary department that strives to take a polytechnic and integrative approach to the instruction of our students.  We emphasize engaged learning through small class sizes, laboratory classes with experiential learning opportunities, internships, and research opportunities for undergraduate students.  Our students work directly with their professors on topical research problems, and our degree programs prepare students for graduate or other professional school programs (e.g. medical school, dental school, and other allied health related programs), becoming teachers, or direct entry into the work-place.  Regardless of path, we emphasize critical thinking in our teaching, and we teach our students to become life-long learners.  It is an exciting time at Texas A&M University – San Antonio; a new Water Resources Research Institute that will work closely with the department is being formed, and a new Science and Technology building, with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for teaching and research, is under construction to help our students achieve their educational and career goals.
