Welcome Faculty and Staff

Due to liability concerns, Student Counseling Center (SCC) licensed clinicians are not allowed to engage in therapy services with TAMU-SA faculty and/or staff members. Faculty & Staff of Texas A&M University-San Antonio can receive support through ComPsych Guidance Resources. ComPsych GuidanceResources has replaced the Employee Assistance Program provider (Deer Oaks) as of September 1, 2019. The A&M System is pleased to offer Work/Life Solutions to both employees and retirees for the first time this plan year.

Services include counseling, childcare topics, concierge services for home repair, education and housing needs, in-house financial guidance by CPAs, CFPs, and referrals to financial advisors in your area, legal advice on divorce, adoption, estate planning, and real estate, eldercare, and more.

The Work/Life Solutions program by GuidanceResources offers someone to talk to and resources to consult whenever and wherever you need them.

As individuals who work closely with A&M-SA students, you may encounter distressed students in your offices or classrooms. Your role could be a crucial and positive one in identifying and referring students who are experiencing some difficulty with mental health concerns.

What You Can Do:
  • Contact Student Counseling Center to consult with a licensed clinician regarding your concerns for the student. 
  • File a CARE report. 
  • Speak with the student directly and express your concerns. Provide the student the Student Counseling & Wellness Services phone number (210) 784-1331 and location (Modular C, rear entrance - room 166) and encourage him/her/them to schedule an appointment.
  • If this situation is an emergency, call UPD immediately (210) 784-1911. If a student has a weapon or has threatened you, call 911.


The Student Counseling Center considers a situation to be an emergency/crisis when the following information is reported by students:

  1. Immediate danger of seriously harming or killing themselves,
  2. Immediate danger of harming or killing someone else,
  3. A recent physical and/or sexual assault,
  4. Someone close to the student recently received a serious diagnosis or died,
  5. Hearing and/or seeing things that others around them do not hear or see,
  6. Discharged from a psychiatric hospital within the past month.

  1. What The Student Counseling Center Can Do:
    • Assess the student's needs - in the initial conslutation with a licensed counselor, we will assess the student's needs and what services may be deemed most appropriate. If there are acute or long-term needs, the student may be referred into the community for a higher level of care.
  2. After you've referred a student to Counseling: 
    • We understand that you may be interested in the progress of the student you have referred; however, we are bound by the principles of confidentiality as defined by our respective licensing boards as well as state and federal laws.  We can only release information with written permission from the student.

    Student Counseling can... 
    • Answer questions concerning steps to take in assisting students visiting the Student Counseling & Wellness Services Office. 
    • Offer you information about common mental health concerns.
              
    Student Counseling cannot...
    • Confirm or deny whether a student is being seen here or has kept an appointment.
    • Discuss the content of therapy sessions. 
    • Discuss treatment plans or progress.

    Note: A student may find it in his/her best interest for information to be shared with faculty, staff, a family member or significant other. However, a student must complete a Release of Information Form provided by the Student Counseling Center for information to be shared with anyone. 
    Classroom Presentations & Programming Requests:
    • Student Counseling Center primary function is to see students for mental health counseling. At times however, we are able to accommodate presentation and programming requests from faculty, staff, and students.  We request an email be sent to StuCounseling@tamusa.edu six (6) weeks or more in advance of the event/presentation. Please include: date, time, location, the topic you are interested in having a counselor discuss, and the number of students expected to attend. 
    • Emails are responded to during normal business hours, Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.; once Student Counseling & Wellness receives your request, office personnel will respond within 48 hours.
